WCA Enrichment Teacher Named “Educator of the Week”

We are pleased to announce that Lisa Cheek, one of our Enrichment Center teachers, has been named “Educator of the Week” by FOX8 (sponsored by the N.C. Education Lottery). One of the many blessings of Wesleyan is the wonderful faculty that the Lord has provided us. Lisa Cheek is just one example of the men and women at Wesleyan who passionately love teaching their students.

FOX8 received several emails from individuals who nominated Mrs. Cheek for this great honor.  WCA alumna, Jenny Fogleman (’16), was one who felt that her teacher was deserving of this recognition as she described her as “the most caring teacher ever”.  Mrs. Cheek is not only helping her students to receive a great education, but shows them how much she cares about them personally.  As Jenny expressed in her letter to FOX8, Mrs. Cheek’s students pay close attention to how she goes the extra mile to encourage them.  These students know very well that their teacher truly cares not only about making sure they receive a quality education, but also finding their greater purpose in Christ.  Because of this kind of relationship established between Mrs. Cheek and her students, you will often hear them affectionately refer to her as “Mama Cheek”.

The Enrichment Center at Wesleyan is a “school within a school” where students who deal with learning differences get the extra help and attention they need.  Mrs. Cheek teaches high school Spanish and History and says that her students motivate her to give of her best to them.  “They have been blessed with a different style of learning, and they work diligently to be successful,” said Mrs. Cheek. She especially loves “when they return from college with their stories of achievement.”

When asked what she wants all of her students to know before they leave her classroom, she said “haga lo que haga como si para El Señor”, which is Spanish for “Do what you do as if for the Lord” Colossians 3:23.  Mrs. Cheek not only teaches this to her students, but she lives it out daily.  Everything she does is done with passion and zeal whether it is teaching, serving with the high school students for the Reading Buddy program at Parkview Elementary, or cheering on the Trojans at a game, it is all done for the Lord.
